History: Part Two
The American Super Nintendo was designed by American industrial designer Lance Barr
Barr had previously designed the NES for Nintendo.
Unlike the flat top of the NES, the US SNES had a curved top, supposedly to dissuade gamers from balancing drinks on top of the unit!
Interestingly, the Brazilian SNES uses PAL-region internals, but a USA-design shell.
Not only are the console shells between the various regions different, but in addition, the cartridge shapes were unique for US-market SNES games. This was intended to prevent games from different regions playing on the US console.
The console was originally released with Super Mario World and F-Zero. In the USA, the games Pilotwings, SimCity and Gradius III were also available at launch.
The success of the Super Nintendo can be attributed to a strong partnership with third-party developers. Capcom, Konami, Square, Enix, Koei and Tecmo are among some of the biggest names who made software for the console.
Nintendo’s family-friendly policy toward violence saw them censor violent beat-em up, Mortal Kombat. A year later however, Nintendo actually dropped their censorship policies in favour of the newly-created ESRB.
After a lifetime of success, Nintendo ceased production of the SNES in 1999, three whole years after the launch of its successor, the N64.
The last ever officially-released Nintendo game was Kirby’s Dream Land 3.
